The educational system can be complicated and tricky to navigate, especially with ever-changing guidelines and systems. With a focused effort to provide meaningful and purposeful opportunities to support parent involvement, Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) was pleased to offer the Leading with Educational Attainment Parent Education Series once again. In its secondyear, the series continues to strengthen parent engagement in school and District operations.
Led by our community liaisons, Ms. Yasmin Bravo and Ms. Cynthia Zuniga, in partnership with the Orange County Business Council, the 5-week series fosters an understanding of the educational systems and empowers parents and guardians to be effective advocates for their children’s success in school.
This year, 20 parents from all eight HBCSD schools completed the program. The series was offered in English and Spanish and covered a variety of topics including school involvement, assessments, programs and class placement, college requirements, scholarships, financial aid and more!
“For the community ofparents who have recently arrived in the US, the American educational system can be daunting as it is completely different to what we’re used to,” said elementary parent Fabian Calpaqui. “Learning about the grading systems and graduation requirements as well as the extensive resources we have available to support our children has been incredibly rewarding,” he said.
The interactive series offered dynamic learning opportunities with individual and group activities, homework assignments, discussions, and special guest speakers spanning District and community partners.
“We were presented with so much valuable information,” said middle school parent Linda Rowlson. “I feel empowered and reassured that I can best support my kids throughout their educational journey!” she said.
This year’s Leading with Educational Attainment Parent Education Series’ graduating cohort was recognized at the January Board of Trustees meeting and at a culminating ceremony.
